Dispelling Myths About Dental X-Rays

Without X-rays, your dentist won’t be able to give you the care you need. They need to see the images of intraoral radiography. There are multiple options, including 3D or panoramic X-rays in Phillips.

Although diagnostic radiology has been proven to be safe and effective, the word “radiation” continues to set off alarm bells in a lot of patients. To put an end to the lingering myths that surround dental X-rays, we’ll debunk the most common ones.

Panoramic X-rays Phillips

Myths vs. Realities

MYTH #1: “A dental X-ray is required whenever you visit your dentist.”

You won’t always need an x-ray if you have good oral health. However, if your dentist has to treat you for an unstable dental situation, they may recommend a series of dental X-rays.

MYTH #2: “Dental X-rays can cause you to develop brain tumors.”

Since no scientific evidence proves the link between ionizing radiation and the development of meningioma, dental X-rays don’t increase your risk of brain tumors.

MYTH #3: “You’ll be exposed to a dangerous amount of radiation.”

People get their own share of radiation exposure from the sun, stars, smoke detectors, road construction materials, televisions, and x-rays. According to research, the average dose of radiation from man-made and natural background sources for Americans is about 6.2 millisieverts.

While a typical intraoral X-ray is about .005 millisieverts, an average dental panoramic x-ray is at .01 millisieverts. On the other hand, the average dose of radiation per person on the planet is only 2.4 millisieverts. Contrary to what most people think, this amount is fairly harmless to humans.

MYTH #4: “Digital X-rays are dangerous for your child’s health.”

Your child’s overall health won’t be affected by digital X-rays because these emit little or no radiation.
