Does Oil Pulling Really Work?

Dating back to ancient times, people have been using oil as a medium to pull toxins out through their mouths. If you’re wondering if this practice is as effective as what people claim it to be, it’s best to ask your Medford dentist.

What is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling involves the removal of toxins and bacteria that accumulate in the mouth. Those who practice it hold and swish oil in the mouth for about 15 to 20 minutes to pull these toxins through the soft oral tissue. After being swished around for long enough, the oil is spat out into the sink along with the oil-soluble toxins from the body.

What Are Its Origins?

The practice of oil pulling originated in ancient Ayurvedic medicinal texts that take a holistic approach. This practice was used to prevent cracked lips, weak teeth, dry throat, bad breath, gum bleeding, and other problems that affect the teeth, gums, and jaw.

The two types of oil pulling include Kavala Graha and Gandusha. Kavala Graha involves swishing a small amount of oil in the mouth for three minutes before gargling and spitting it out. Alternatively, Gandusha involves filling the mouth with oil and swishing it around for up to five minutes before being removed.

Does It Work?

It has been discovered that using sesame oil for oil pulling can potentially help eliminate bad breath-causing bacteria and that it achieves the same results as a Chlorhexidine treatment. However, it’s important to note that although oil pulling may be effective in reducing certain symptoms, it doesn’t eliminate the whole problem.

Despite this, the American Dental Association (ADA) doesn’t officially recommend oil pulling to reduce cavities or improve an individual’s oral health and well-being because of a lack of clinical evidence.
