How Durable are Veneers?

Porcelain veneers in Phillips are tooth-colored “shells” that cover a tooth’s front and conceal aesthetic imperfections to provide the illusion of teeth that are whiter and more evenly spaced.

This is a big purchase for many people, and they want confidence that their veneers will be attractive and useful for many years. Your dentist will likely present you with two options for getting dental veneers: composite or porcelain.

All About Dental Veneers

How Long Do Veneers Last?

A porcelain veneer is a long-lasting, durable, gorgeous, and lifelike restoration. A very tight seal is used to apply the veneer’s edge to the enamel. It is unusual to detect degeneration at these locations in the front of the mouth in a mouth that has been well-cared for.

Porcelain (ceramic) is particularly tough, smooth, and long-lasting. It is more durable than a composite resin veneer and does not discolor or lose color. A veneer may require replacement for the reasons mentioned below:

  • Over time, gums may recede, exposing the space between the veneer and the tooth root. Over time, this may become stained. This can result in a thin brown line in a patient whose gum line is visible.
  • After many years, veneers may shatter and break due to the ceramic’s deterioration from use and regular use.
  • Veneers will break if the bite is drastically altered by tooth loss, acid erosion, or tooth rot.

Do I Need to Get New Veneers?

Yes, most patients eventually replace their veneers over their lifetimes because they last up to 12 years. Your dentist will polish and redo your veneers at this time. A crown also might be an appropriate replacement if the enamel on your natural teeth is no longer sufficient to support a new veneer.
