What You May Not Know About Cosmetic Bonding

What Exactly Is Cosmetic Bonding?

Cosmetic bonding involves the application of tooth-colored composite resin to your teeth. In most cases, patients who aren’t interested in getting porcelain veneers use this to fix common dental issues, including:

  • Discolored or stained teeth
  • Decayed teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Fractured or chipped teeth
  • Short or misshapen teeth
  • Exposed tooth roots resulting from receding gumlines

How Many Dental Visits Does The Procedure Require?

If you’re only getting one or several teeth fixed, the entire procedure can be completed in a single appointment. It takes an average of 30 minutes to about an hour to fix each tooth.

How Can I Prepare For The Procedure?

Are you overdue for a dental cleaning? You’ll be advised to get one before your appointment. But if you’ve got this covered, all you have to do is to head down to your dentist’s office with your teeth brushed and flossed.

What Happens During The Procedure?

Before your dentist prepares the bonding resin, they select a shade that best matches your teeth. Once color is picked, the putty-like resin is molded into shape. No anesthesia is required for surface repairs. But if the affected area is located near a nerve, the dentist may have to apply local anesthesia before drilling out and smoothing down your tooth.

First, the tooth’s surface is roughened before applying a conditioning fluid that helps the resin stick to your pearly whites. Next, the resin is applied to your teeth and is molded into the desired shape. The dentist smooths it down before shining a bright light on the resin to harden it. Once it hardens in just a few seconds, the resin is smoothed out and trimmed to look and feels natural.
