What is Root Canal?

Root canal therapy is a procedure used to repair and save a tooth that has been badly damaged or infected because of deep decay, large fillings, trauma, or other causes. During the treatment, the dentist removes the dead tissue from inside the tooth's root canal(s) and replaces it with a filling material.

This helps to restore the function and integrity of the tooth and prevents further damage or infection. We often complete the procedure in one or two visits, depending on the severity of the damage to the tooth.

How the Process Works

At Northwoods Dentistry, we provide root canal therapy that is comfortable and successful. At your initial appointment, the area around the affected tooth will be numbed with a local anesthetic.

Then the dentist will remove any diseased or infected tissue from inside the root canal(s). This allows them to access and clean out each of the canals in order to prepare them for filling.

Once this is done, they will fill the canals with an inert material such as gutta-percha and then seal off the opening with a crown or other restoration.

Recovery from Root Canal Therapy

After root canal therapy, your tooth may still feel tender for a few days as it adjusts to changes in its structure caused by treatment. It's important to follow your dentist's instructions regarding post-treatment care so that you can minimize pain and promote proper healing.

Your dentist may recommend over-the-counter or prescription medications for any discomfort you experience after the procedure. Be sure to take these as directed and avoid eating hard foods that could cause additional pain or damage to your treated tooth.

It's also important to continue brushing and flossing your teeth daily and visit your dentist for regular checkups.
