TMJ disorder, otherwise known as TMD, refers to issues with the temporomandibular joint and the ability of the patient to open or close their jaw without problems. Many people with TMJ issues experience clicking in their jaw, one side opening wider than the other, teeth grinding, or overall pain in the jaw. There are many reasons as to why TMJ disorder may occur, such as injury, genetics, or arthritis.
Treatment involves studying the individual problems with a patient's jaw, and then recommending steps to help ease the function of the joint. Most treatments for TMD are non-surgical and can be managed by the patient. Surgery for TMJ disorder is often the last step for only very serious cases. While many people have TMD symptoms for years, they often do not report it to a dentist, which can cause problems over time if the TMJ is left untreated.
