Remember that day you had your panoramic x-rays in Phillips and braces on? Well, you’ve come to an end. It is finally time to visit your orthodontist to have your braces removed after waiting for months or years. Once your braces are removed, you can indulge in all the missed meals and take advantage of more straightforward oral hygiene routines. The best part is that you can dazzle everyone with your stunning smile.
You may be eager to get your fixed braces off after several months of wearing them, but what should you anticipate from the removal process?
The base of the brackets will be done by your orthodontist using pliers and gentle pressure. This causes the adhesive between them to weaken and split. Your dentist will perform this for each bracket. During the process, you will feel a light pressure on the teeth; it shouldn’t hurt.
A bonding glue will be left on the surface of your teeth after the brackets have been taken off. Your orthodontist will need to use a specialized tool to remove this altogether. Removing the bonding glue usually takes five to ten minutes, depending on how much adhesive has been left on your teeth. Even though it won’t hurt, there might be a little discomfort, especially when you have sensitive teeth.
Most people will need to use a retainer for a while after getting their braces removed to keep their teeth in their new locations. Each patient’s situation is unique; therefore, your dentist may advise wearing a retainer for a few years or indefinitely.
Your gum tissue may be slightly inflamed after removing your braces, but this should go away after a few days of diligent brushing and flossing. Beyond that, make sure to continue practicing good dental hygiene. Don’t immediately start eating the crunchy and chewy foods you were cautioned against while wearing your fixed braces because the newly exposed enamel may initially be slightly more sensitive than usual.
The most important thing to keep in mind is to wear your retainer when instructed to do so constantly, or else you run the danger of undoing all the progress your fixed braces made. Call us for more information.
